Evacuees 1940
Although the log books of Froyle School do not mention any evacuees, we understand that children from the Portsmouth area as well as London were evacuated to Froyle. Also, we have been given the photograph above by Marj Robinson - it was taken in 1940 and shows a couple of young evacuees standing with David Brownjohn (the lad with cap on the right) outside Rock House Farm in Lower Froyle. The two evacuees are believed to be Dutch with the name Van Eagam (spelling may not be correct).
Patricia Pritchard (nee Milne) has put together the list below of those she can remember. If you recognise your name here, or are one of the lads in the photo, or are not on the list but were evacuated to Froyle, we would love to hear from you.

  • Harry and Jimmy Short
  • Heather and Rosemary Fittock
  • Derek Murfin
  • Rita and Barbara Woodhouse
  • Muriel and Mildred Parrott
  • Joy and Pat Target
  • Basil Cumpstey
  • D. Eldridge
  • Rosemary and Denise ??? (twins, staying at Mrs Hadwicks)

Pat believes that the Portsmouth children were ‘just’ evacuated here, but the London children stayed with relatives or family friends. We are delighted that we have already made contact with four of these “Happy Vaccies” (as they call themselves) seen here at the Reunion with Pat herself:-

The Happy Vaccies
  • Dorothy Salway (nee Diaper)
  • Joyce Lintott (nee Diaper)
  • Marge Diaper (maiden name unknown)
  • Derek Kemp
