Translated from the Latin in the 1920s

Wednesday, before the Feast of St.Barnabas, the Apostle (11 June) 1383.

I, John Motte Snr. of Froyle of sound mind etc. do make my will and testament as follows:-
I do bequeath my Soul to God & to the Blessed Mary & to all the Saints, & my body to be buried where God wills.
Also I bequeath to the fabric of the Church of Froyle 2/-
To the Vicar of the Church 12d.
To the Clerk of the said Church 4d.
Indulgence - of St Swithin of Winchester 4d.
Indulgence - St. Anthony 2d.
I bequeath to the Image of the Blessed Mary for one wax candle of the weight of one pound to burn there without diminution.
Also I bequeath to the Sepulchre maid in the said Church on the day of the Parasceve (afternoon of Good Friday) to burn from the said day until the day of the Resurrection, one candle of wax of the weight of two pounds.
Also I bequeath for lights before the three altars, outside The Chancel, to each of them two pence.
Also I bequeath to Amisia, my sister 40/-.
Also to Johanna, her daughter 20/-.
Also I bequeath to Symon Sheperman of London & Alicia his wife 13/4.
Also to Agnes their daughter 6/8.
Also to Johanna, daughter of Richard Heyford one chest with ……(illegible)
Also to Agnes, her daughter 1 brass pot …… (illegible) ….. and honey.
Also to Cecilia, daughter of the aforesaid Richard one chest with …..
Also to Amisia, daughter of the same, one ewe with a lamb.
Also I bequeath to Thomas Corethe 20/-.
Also to Henry Holte 20/-.
Richard Heyford 20/- which Thomas, Henry and Richard I appoint, ordain and make my executors and bequeath the aforesaid money to them for their labours that they may dispose of my estate for the health (or good) of my Soul, as they shall arrive (?) before the Great Judge.
And that the aforesaid Thomas, Henry, & Richard, my executors, shall recover all sums owing to me and shall satisfy and pay the legacies aforesaid, and in particular among these £37 of lawful money in which Nicholas Huseye is bound to me.
The remainder of all my goods not before bequeathed I give and bequeath to Alicia, my wife.
Also I will and bequeath that John, my son and Cecilia his wife should have from my debts aforesaid 40/-.
In testimony whereof I set my seal with my own hands to this present Will, in the presence of Ralphe Norwich, Taverner, John Sumerton, Taverner, William Dount(?), Clerk, and others.
Given at London on the day and year aforesaid in the reign of King Richard II.


The Probate was granted 19 November 1383 to Thomas Corethe & Richard Heyford, also executors named in the Will, and also with their consent to John Sumerton.
