Park Lane in the 1930s
Park Lane in the 1930s
About 1900 there was quite a spate of re-building in Lower Froyle. William Westbrook took down thirteen old cottages and built three pairs of cottages and a single one - these were at the Northern end of the village and included Rose Cottage and Rock Cottage. A Mr. Butler of Husseys built two in Hussey’s Lane, and Mr. Duncan of Coldrey built two at the corner of Park Lane on the site of two old ones - these are the two on the right of the picture.
To help in following the details on the following pages, the houses in the picture are, from left to right:-
4 Park Lane, 3 Park Lane, 2 Park Lane, 1 Park Lane and Elmcroft.
Park Lane at the turn of the century was called School House Lane - it had been known as Lawrence’s Lane and Croucher’s Lane. The name seems to have been derived from whoever was living at the far end of Park Lane.
