Lest We Forget In 2010 The Froyle Archive took a list of 30 initials and surnames that were set in stone on a war memorial mid way between the two halves that make up the tiny village of Froyle, near Alton, in Hampshire.
The initial aim was to put a christian name to those surnames, so that they might be read aloud on each Armistice Day in the future. From this grew the idea of a publication of some kind to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War One - the Great War, as it was called. And so the quest began!
Starting a book with just a list of names is a daunting task and, unlike my two previous books about the village, where I could rely on the memories of local people or history already gathered by previous village historians, I was surprised by how little was known about the thirty men. But slowly, every man (well, almost every man!) began to appear. I have to say it has been a humbling and often traumatic journey, I almost feel I know them all. I just hope I have done them justice!
The Alton Gazette and the Froyle parish magazines have been my main sources, as well as war diaries and information from various regiments. I have tried to stick to the facts and apologise for any errors. More and more information is coming in all the time and we will continue to update details on this, our dedicated web site.
