Frank Edward Hounsham was born in East Worldham, near Alton, on 10th May 1897. The younger brother of David Hounsham, the 1911 Census records him living with his parents, Henry and Mary Ann Hounsham in Husseys Lane, Lower Froyle and attending the local village school.
Frank Hounsham enlisted in Winchester on 15th October 1914. He served with 2/1st Sussex Yeomanry for 8 months & the Queen’s Royal Regiment West Surrey, for 2 years, serving with them at Gallipoli. He then transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves on 16th June 1917 for the Royal Naval Division, (raised from reservists and volunteers who were not needed for service at sea), joining Hood Battalion on 28th August 1917. He held the rank of R/2674 Able Seaman Frank Hounsham.
Frank suffered gun shot wounds to both legs on 30th September 1918, resulting in massive haemorrhage, and he was invalided to the UK on 3rd October. He passed away at 10.25pm on 22nd October 1918 in the Queen Mary’s Military Hospital, in Whalley, Lancashire.
He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, as well as the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Able Seaman Frank Hounsham is laid to rest in the Queen Mary’s Military Cemetery, in Whalley, Lancashire, Grave 18.
