Nelson James Aitcheson was born in Holybourne, near Alton, on 1st June 1896. He was the son of Arthur and Martha (née Baker) Aitcheson and, at the time of the 1911 Census, the family were living in Old Post Office Cottage, Lower Froyle. Nelson’s father, Arthur, had served with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in many parts of the world and most of his large family were born abroad. At the time of the census Nelson was described as an underkeeper on the Froyle Estate. The Estate, which encompassed most of the village of Upper Froyle, was owned by Sir Hubert Miller, the last Lord of the Manor of Froyle.
He enlisted at Aldershot in 1914 and was serving as 10492 Private Nelson Aitcheson, with the 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment, at the time of his death.
Having undergone final training at Basingstoke, Nelson’s regiment sailed for Gallipoli from Liverpool on the 7th July 1915, via Mudros. It landed at Anzac Cove on 6th August and went into action on Sari Bair. This battle lasted until 10th August, with the gunfire so intense it set the undergrowth alight and many of the wounded were literally incinerated where they lay. Nelson was listed presumed dead on 10th, just 4 days after arriving. He was 19 years old.
He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, as well as the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Private Nelson Aitcheson is commemorated on the Helles Memorial in Gallipoli, Cannakkale, Turkey, Panel 125-134 or 223-226, 228-229 & 328.
